Summer Reading Fun at Mokena Community Public Library District begins Friday, June 7 and continues through July 26, 2013. Children, Teens and Adults, there will be something special for everyone! Great Programs and Great Prizes too. Registration will be held on Friday June 7, 2013 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. but you may register any time throughout the program. All prize winners along with the Grand Prize Winners will be announced at our Summer Read Carnival on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 from 1:00-3:00p.m.
"Have Book Will Travel" Children’s Summer Reading Program for Pre-K through Grade 8. Participants in the program are encouraged to read and record their minutes. Prizes will be given as a reward for reading. The more you read the more prizes you earn!
We will travel to a different country each week with great programs so remember to sign up early; you don’t want to miss out. In order to attend the summer reading programs, you must join the reading club.
Programs WEEK 1 ...GERMANY
Funny Stories Show with Chris Fascione (all ages) on Tuesday, June 11th from 10-11:00 a.m.
Explore the German culture (grades 4-8) on Wednesday, June 12th from 3-4:00 p.m.
German stories with Matt (ages 5-9 years old) on Thursday, June 13 10-10:45 a. m.
"You Read" High School Summer Reading Program for Grades 9-12. High School students who read books, graphic novels, magazines and/or participate in the Summer Read activities can earn raffle tickets to enter into our drawing for great prizes. Prizes include Bag of Swag, GameStop Gift Card, Dinner & Movie Gift Card, Longboard, Gas Card, iTunes Gift Card, Forever 21 Gift Card, iPod Touch, Kindle Fire, Electric Guitar, and Wii U.

"Have Book Will Travel" Adult Summer Reading Program for Adults, 18 years of age or older. Whether traveling this summer or just sitting back, relaxing and being an armchair traveler, Mokena Library has a book for you. Stop in and choose a few great reads or go online to www.mokena.lib.il.us and download to your ereader. Each book read (audio books included) will earn a raffle ticket to be used towards the prize of the reader’s choice. Prizes include: Restaurant Gift Cards, free car washes, travel accessories and more. A Grand Prize (Samsonite Luggage Silhouette 12 Spinner Expandable 25" Suitcase) will be awarded to the person reading the most books during the 7 week period of time.
Adult Summer Programs:
Polish/American Fusion Grilling on Saturday, June 15, 2013 from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
Chef Michael Niksic will share his knowledge of Polish/American fusion grilling. All skill level cooks can learn how to apply professional grilling methods & food preparation in their own backyard or tail gate party. Recipes & tip sheets will be given out and one lucky person will go home with grilling Goodies.
Illinois Rt. 66, on a Tank of Gas on Saturday, July 13, 2013 from 1:00-2:00p.m.
Many travelers believe that Route 66 in Illinois has more attractions per mile than any other state. With our high price of gasoline, people are deciding to remain closer to home on their vacations. Join us as Highway Historian Dave Clark tells the story of Route 66 in Illinois in pictures and music and presents a virtual tour of Route 66 in Illinois. Along the way, we stop at the restaurants, museums, and historic sites that give Illinois Route 66 its special character. We stop at such iconic Route 66 treasures as the Del Rhea Chicken Basket, Funk’s Grove Maple Sirup, the Cozy Dog Drive-In, and Henry’s Rabbit Ranch. We will take a brief look at the wonders to be seen along the Great River Road from Alton to Fulton, and the Lincoln Highway from Fulton to Chicago Heights.
